We are proud to be keeping traditional tool making skills alive in Australia. We have been tool making since 1994 and manufacturing axes since 2002 after a long period of research and development , using them day to day in a bush environment cutting timber for our rural fencing business and a not to mention a lifelong love of axes. Every step of manufacturing is personally overseen by Steve Snedden the business founder.
Top quality alloys - nickel chrome moly 4340 (also used to make earth moving equipment for durability and strength) are used. Once the head is cast using the lost wax method each heads cutting face is forged under a 75 kg weight power hammer with a series of specially machined dies to ensure we deliver consistent and accurate cutting edges. This technique has been used by tool makers throughout history with success. The head is heat treated to ensure the correct hardness and temper , once treated they are individually shaped and sharpened to an easy to maintain cutting edge suitable for our Australian hardwoods in a bush working environment
The handles have been ergonomically designed by Steve and manufactured in house from local spotted gum. The design incorporates a double grip for more comfortable use. After the handle is hand fitted and wedged each head is pinned for safety and individually numbered.
A leather sheath is included with your hatchet purchase. Leather handle protectors are also available on he website.
These hatchets are top quality heirloom pieces.
We can get your axe hand engraved with a name and date for an extra $40 to make it a special 21st , Birthday , Fathers Day. Etc. Please note engraving is limited to a name and date or less and is in an old fashioned script font.
Buying from Snedden's is supporting a generational small rural family business that employs dedicated hard working Australians. We sincerely appreciate your support.
